Quote - Spurgeon

"The doctrine of justification itself, as preached by an Arminian, is nothing but the doctrine of salvation by works..." -- C.H. Spurgeon

Prayer (Part 1)

I have been doing a lot of study about Evangelism lately and my wife even asked me to tone it down a bit. I have one last rabbit trail to go down and then -barring finding something else to chase- I am off to study another area.

What brought me to this point is a friend that was asking questions about Salvation and the working of God verses the Free Will of Man ... a great topic. :-) Still I was impressed when my friend returned with a response that we are still to wittiness and evangelize no matter how we understand God's workings of salvation for the elect. Further more very personal examples were presented about family and the way we pray for our children's salvation etc.

Prayer ... some times we take it for granted, sometimes we use it just for emergencies, sometimes it is a simple "grace" at meal times, sometimes it is a shopping list, sometimes it is the good night to our children.

This left me with an interesting side look at prayer in my life. When I was most active in my spiritual life and less distracted with the things of earth... prayer was a large part of my daily life. Now I am not saying I don't pray ... I am saying I don't pray enough and I don't pray the right way all the time.

1. the act of communicating with a deity;
2. reverent petition to a deity;
3. entreaty: earnest or urgent request;

My favorite definition of prayer that I found was "A privilege and an obligation of the Christian where we communicate with God"

Calvin states that prayer is "the chief exercise of faith," and by means of this principal activity of faith believers "receive God's benefits."

What is prayer to you?

A Race

"One thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus."
- Philippians 3:13-14 (NIV)
